When you lose touch with yourself, you lose yourself in the world.
Your innermost sense of self, of who you are, is inseparable from stillness.
This is the ‘I Am’ that is deeper than name and form.”
— Eckhart Tolle
The Power of Stillness: Finding Wisdom in the Quiet
How often do we find ourselves swept up in the noise of life, our roles, our to-do lists, the hum of expectation?
It can happen without us even noticing. One moment we’re present, breathing, aligned… and the next we’re caught in the whirlwind of the world, trying to keep up, prove ourselves, or manage everything at once.
This quote from Eckhart Tolle stopped me in my tracks. I’ve read it before, but recently it landed deeper.
Because here’s the truth: when we disconnect from stillness, we disconnect from our truth. And when we disconnect from our truth, we begin to shape-shift to fit the world rather than standing rooted in who we really are.
Stillness isn’t emptiness. It isn’t passivity or detachment. It is the most alive, fertile space we can touch.
Stillness is the wellspring of wisdom, clarity, and intuitive knowing. It’s where the noise quiets enough for us to hear the voice within – the whisper of the deeper self that Tolle often describes as the “I Am.”
The part of us that exists beyond name, title, role, or story. This is where real power begins. Not in the hustle, but in the hush.
Why Stillness Matters for Wellbeing
In a world that constantly pulls our attention outward, the practice of inner stillness has become more important than ever.
Many people feel overwhelmed by information, responsibilities, and expectations. Without moments of quiet reflection, we can lose touch with the deeper awareness that guides our decisions and sense of purpose.
Practices that cultivate stillness such as mindfulness, meditation, and breath awareness, help calm the nervous system and bring attention back to the present moment.
When we reconnect with stillness, we reconnect with ourselves.
A Simple Practice: Coming Home to Stillness
If you’re feeling pulled in a thousand directions, here is something gentle you can try.
Just ten minutes — but it can shift everything.
The 10-Minute Stillness Practice
Find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed. Sit or lie down comfortably. Let your hands rest softly, your jaw unclench, and your shoulders drop.
Close your eyes and bring your attention to your breath. There is no need to change it — simply notice it.
Inhale.
Exhale.
Let each breath remind you that you are here.
Feel into the space between breaths. The slight pause before you inhale again. That pause is your entry point into stillness.
Allow yourself to rest there.
As thoughts arise (and they will), greet them gently and then return to the breath. No judgement. Just a soft return, like coming home.
After a few minutes, bring your awareness to the stillness beneath the surface.
Beyond thought.
Beneath emotion.
The quiet space within.
Just be there.
No effort.
No outcome.
Just being.
When you’re ready, slowly open your eyes and notice how you feel.
Returning to Inner Stillness
The world will always call us outward.
But wisdom calls us inward.
The more often we return to inner stillness, the more we begin to live from a place that is grounded, present, and authentic.
A sacred pause that allows us to realign with the deeper self the quiet awareness that exists beneath all roles, stories, and expectations.
This week, give yourself the gift of that sacred space, even if it’s just for a few minutes each day. Because from that stillness, your real wisdom rises.
